GPPS Summer Picnics will be every other Wednesday throughout the summer on the school playground from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Bring your own picnic and let the kids play on the playground or in the sandbox. It’s a great time to meet the teacher, greet old friends and welcome incoming families. Note: due to a church event, the August 6th picnic will be near the picnic tables and playground at Gabriel Park, just up the hill on S.W. Vermont.

Parent's Role & Responsibilities.

GPPS cannot function without the cooperation of all families. Upon enrollment, parents agree to accept responsibility for the following obligations:

  • Attend Family Orientation (held before school begins in the fall).
  • Assist teacher in the classroom as parent helper.
Parent help days are shared equally among parents in each class.
  • Parents are required to help in the classroom on average about twice a month.
  • Complete a school support job or serve on the GPPS Board.
  • Attend 3-4 general family meetings held throughout the school year. These meetings are usually held at 7:00 PM on a weeknight in Fellowship Hall at St. Luke’s.
  • Participate in school work parties.
  • Participate in school fundraising activities.
Previous years' activities have included a holiday wreath sale, GPPS Night at local restaurants, and annual Rummage sale. Participation in the wreath sale has been mandatory with a monetary commitment per family.
  • Meet health and financial requirements on time (including prompt return of health/immunization records and prompt payment of tuition and fees).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a co-op?
A:
A co-op preschool is a program that is operated by the teacher and a group of parents who take an active interest in their children’s first educational experience. Parents help the teacher in the classroom, are given opportunities for education and are involved in the operation of the school.

Q: How much does it cost?
A:
A one-time registration fee of $75 and the last month’s tuition (May) is due at time of registration.  Tuition is due by the 10th of the month (September – April).  Tuition for 2008-2009 is $110 per month.  We offer a discount for families with more than one child enrolled in the same school year.

Q: What days and hours does the school operate?
A:
Class is in session 9:15-11:45am M/W/F.  We begin in mid-September and end Memorial Day weekend.  Holidays and vacation days closely coincide with the Portland Public School district with the exception of teacher in-service days. Optional Lunch Bunch starting in January is available M/W 11:45am-12:45pm for $5 per day.

Q: What age does my child have to be to attend GPPS?
A:
Our birth date deadline is October 31st which means children should be 3 years by October 31st of enrollment year.

Q: What do parents do to be involved in the preschool?
A:
In short, parents help in the classroom, hold a family job or serve on a committee, attend family meetings and work parties and participate in fundraising events.

Q: Does your school do fundraising?
A:
Yes. Fundraising serves as a way to off-set our operational expenses while keeping our tuition relatively low. Over the past few years we’ve had successful fundraising events such as a wreath sale in the fall and a rummage sale in the spring.  Throughout the year we’ve also had restaurant nights which are an easy way to raise money while dining out and visiting with friends.

Q: How can I get a closer look?
A:
Give us a call and we’ll set up a time for you to tour the school and meet the teacher.  You are also welcome to drop by the playground during the summer for one of our school picnics.
